  MLS 2012 PLAYOFF PRIMER

 

The MLS regular season has come to an end last night and its time for the playoffs. Here is a rundown of the teams, schedules and explanation of how the MLS playoffs work.

 

KNOCKOUT ROUND –

Each Conference’s top 5 teams enter the playoffs. The Knockout Round is a single match that is hosted by the #4 seed in each Conference vs. the #5 seed. The winner will advance to the CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS to play their respective #1 seeds.

WESTERN CONFERENCE KNOCKOUT MATCH:

CONFERENCE SEMIFINALS –

The Conference semifinal matches are played over 2-legs. But note: unlike european cup matches, away goals do not come into condiseration. If aggregate score is level after the 2 leg, there are two 15-minute overtime periods and penalties if necessary. The lower seed hosts the 1st leg.

CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS –

The Conference Championship round is also played over 2 legs and under the same system as the Conference Semifinals – lower seed hosts the 1st leg; no away goal rule; overtime and penalties if necessary.

The 1st legs in both Conferences are scheduled to take place on November 10 thru 12. The 2nd legs will take place November 17 & 18.

 

 

MLS CUP –

The Final is a single match event hosted by the team with the best record during the regular season. It will take place on December 1st, 2012 at 4:30pm ET. The match will be shown live on ESPN (in English) and TeleFutura (in Spanish).
