CONMEBOL – Round #9 Preview – October 12 2012

Friday’s round of South American qualifying represents the official halfway mark. The fact that 3 points is all that separates 1st place from 6th place speaks volumes of how exciting the qualifying has been. Here at the current standings and preview of Friday’s matches:

….TEAM…………………….PTS.………..GD
1. Argentina………………….14…………..+9
2. Colombia………………….13…………..+6
3. Ecuador…………………..13…………..+1
4. Uruguay…………………..12…………..+4
5. Chile………………………12……………-1
6. Venezuela………………..11……………-1
7. Peru………………………..7……………-4
8. Bolivia……………………..4……………-5
9. Paraguay………………….4……………-9

– Top 4 teams qualify directly for Brasil 2014. The 5th place team will face the 3rd place team from the Asian Confederation for a spot in the Finals.

4:30pm ET COLOMBIA V PARAGUAY
live on beINSport-ñ;   30-minute version on beINSport-HD on Saturday @ 5am ET.

– Paraguay have been the biggest disappointment of this qualifying cycle and things will likely not get much better on Friday. Paraguay have never won at Barranquilla in four attempts and find a Colombia side that is playing some very good football at the moment. The game is worth checking out just for the talents of Colombian striker Radamel Falcao who is on fire for his national side as well as his club side Atletico Madrid. Hard to see how Paraguay’s defence who have allowed a group worse 14 goals will be able to slow Falcao down.

5:00pm ET ECUADOR V CHILE
– live on beINSport-HD

– Not only do Ecuador have a perfect 4-0 record at home in qualifiers, they also have not conceded a single goal at home. There is little doubt that when all the qualifiers are done, it will be these two teams in that middle ground fighting for a chance for the Finals, so this match will go a long way in deciding who will be taking the short trip to Brazil in just under 2 years time. Chile have been inconsistent at best. There are some quality players on its squad such as Bracelona’s Alexis Sanchez and Juventus’ Arturo Vidal but which Chile will show up for this match will determine if Ecuador can continue their impressive home form.

5:00pm ET BOLIVIA V PERU
– delayed only on beINSport-ñ at 6:30pm ET

– Not sure if either of these teams will be travelling to Brasil in 2014. Bolivia is well known as a tough place to walk away with points due to the high altitude but Chile and Colombia already took maximum points here. The truth is both teams lack the quality to contend for a World Cup place. Although, Peru showed some quality last month in beating Venezuela and holding Argentina to a 1-1 draw. Peru could find themselves within striking distance of a playoff place with a victory here but a draw or a Bolivia victory would only confirm that both of these teams will be fighting not to finish last.

8:00pm ET ARGENTINA V URUGUAY
– live on beINSport-ñ; delayed on beINSport-HD on Saturdat @ 12:30am ET.

– The marquee matchup of the round. Argentina will be looking to solidify their first place position while Uruguay will want to keep pace to finish in the top 4. The game is more about the showcasing of incredible on-filed talent such as Messi, di Maria, Higuain, Suarez, Forlan, etc. What will hopefully be avoided is the often brutal encounters when these two foes meet and we can sit back and enjoy some good quality football….hopefully…
