CONMEBOL – Round #10 Preview – 16 October 2012

The halfway mark has officially been reached and we turn into the homestretch in South America. Again, a reminder that the top 4 qualify for the Finals in Brasil in 2014 with the 5th placed team playing aginst the 3rd place finisher from the Asian Confederation. After this round, there is a long break until March 2013. Here is a preview of Tuesday’s matches:

4:00pm ET BOLIVIA vs. URUGUAY
– live on beINSport-hd;   Delayed on beINSport-ñ @ 10:30pm ET.

– Uruguay are in that tricky middle of the table where a slip-up can mean missing out on the World Cup. It’s these types of matches that ultimately determine the teams destiny. Colombia and Chile have already taken max points in Bolivia – a place that has given the best of teams a tough time due to high altitude. Don’t mean to dismiss Bolivia so early in the competition but this squad has shown very little in order to compete for a place on the big stage. Uruguay must do what Colombia and Chile have already done or they will find themselves in future must-win situations which is not where you want to be in South America.

6:00pm ET VENEZUELA vs. ECUADOR
– live on beINSport-ñ;   Delayed on beINSport-HD on Wednesday @ 8pm.

– Fascinating matchup here. Venezuela were off on Friday and need to win to keep pace with the top 5 in order to have any chance of qualifying. Venezuela have already registered a home win against Argentina in round #2 and have the talent to surprise what is turning out to be a very good Ecuadorian squad. Ecuador, who are perfect at home, are still looking for their first road victory after 2 defeats and a draw. Home field for Venezuela makes this a very evenly matched up affair but it will be interesting to see if Ecuador can finally bring their home form on the road.

6:00pm ET PARAGUAY vs. PERU
– live on beINSport-HD;   Delayed on beINSport-ñ on Wednesday @ 5:30pm.

– Dropping any points here would put a dagger into Paraguay’s chances. Some may say its already too late. 8 points behind that important 5th spot with 8 games to go means Paraguay need to play perfect football in the second half of the competition. Five of those 8 games are at home so perhaps there is still hope. One thing is for sure, they need maximum points here and anything else means the end.

8:05pm ET CHILE vs. ARGENTINA
– live on beINSport-HD & ñ

– What to say after Argentina’s and particularly, Leo Messi’s incredible performance against Uruguay on Friday? Argentina are the class of the region and they are only getting better. But lets not forget, this is a team that earlier dropped all 3 points in Venezuela as well as 2 points in Peru. Will that inconsistency rear its ugly head again? Chile will have their home crowd behind them and like every other team in CONMEBOL, they will be up for an Argentinean challenge. Chile started well in Ecuador on Friday and just got run over by the home team as the game wore on. They can’t afford to sit back and absorb Argentina’s pressure. They will need to attack which should make for an interesting match.
